A guide to Swiss ski resorts
Switzerland is becoming more popular with investors as the property market opens up. Foreign buyers (without Swiss permit B or C) are able to buy properties in most ski resorts in the Swiss cantons of Vaud. A recent moratorium prevents foreign buyers buying properties during 2007 in seven areas in the Valais Canton - namely Grimentz, Veysonnaz, Nendaz, Bagnes (Verbier), Hérémence, Riddes and Val d’Illiez.
Canton of Valais
Verbier
Verbier's excellent skiing and infamous nightlife
is popular internationally as well as with residents
of Geneva, Montreux and Lausanne. The off-piste
is as extensive as the pisted ski area and as
a winter destination it is Switzerland's No. 1.
Summers in Verbier are increasingly busy.
Properties in Verbier: As the most popular
ski resort in the Valais canton, properties in
the resort centre are highly sought-after. New
developments in Savoleyres and Patiers are of
good quality and geared to the luxury end of the
property market. Opportunities also exist in the
nearby villages of Le Chable and Bruson. During
2007 property can only be sold to purchasers with
a Swiss permit B or C.
Saas Fee
The car-free ski resort of Saas Fee is the perfect
location for the enthusiastic skier - skiing is
possible year-round on the glacier above the village.
The resort centre charms both skiers and non-skiers
and the scenic surroundings attract as many visitors
in the summer as in the winter.
Properties in Saas Fee: Foreign buyers
have only recently been allowed to buy in this
charming Swiss resort and the new opportunity
has seen a rush of investors. Apartments are more
readily available to purchase than free-standing
chalets.
Crans Montana
Crans Montana is as well known for its golf courses
(it is the venue of the Omega European Masters)
as it is for wintersports, making the mountain
village an ideal choice for fans of both sports.
The skiing with its spectacular views and sunny
reputation is best suited to intermediates.
Properties in Crans Montana: Properties
in Crans Montana are generally upmarket and built
to a high standard. The Swiss ski resort has long
appealed to purchasers looking for a permanent
base in the Swiss Alps, though a recent moratorium
on new developments will limit future property
investment opportunities.
Nendaz
Linked into the same ski area as Verbier, Switzerland's
extensive "Four Valleys", Nendaz is
a newer ski resort suitable for young families
or those looking for a quieter village centre.
The village is 30 minutes from Sion airport as
well as an easy motorway drive from Geneva.
Properties in Nendaz: Most chalets for
sale in Nendaz are new chalet developments built
in wood. It is one of the few Swiss ski resorts
where there is still opportunity for purchasing
plots of land for building. Investors benefit
from the same ski area as Verbier without paying
the same high property prices. During 2007 property
can only be sold to purchasers with a Swiss permit
B or C.
Canton of Vaud
Gstaad
One of the most traditional ski resorts in the
European Alps, Gstaad attracts a wealthy, chic
crowd both winter and summer. Activities are not
restricted to wintersports and non-skiers will
enjoy the luxury shopping, excellent restaurants
and other leisure facilities in this attractive
resort.
Properties in Gstaad: Gstaad's reputation
as a ski resort for the rich and famous has led
to high property prices. The nearby villages of
Chateaux d'Oex (famous for its annual balloon
festival) and Rougemont offer quieter, more affordable
alternatives.
Villars
As one of the closest ski resorts to Geneva airport
the charming village of Villars is the perfect
weekend destination with excellent motorway access
and a regular train service. For skiers snow is
guaranteed, as Villars' ski pistes link to the
high altitude Diablerets Glacier 3000.
Properties in Villars: Buyers wishing to
purchase chalets or apartments in Villars benefit
from the more relaxed rules for foreign property
investment in the Vaud canton. There is a wide
choice of real estate available and the lack of
re-sale restrictions makes the Swiss ski resort
a good choice.
