Buying Experts for Luxury Property in Chamonix

The Alpine Specialist Guide to Chamonix, France

The ski resort
The busy French ski resort of Chamonix has undergone a renaissance in the last few years. Designer boutiques such as Chanel and members’ clubs such as the Clubhouse signal the arrival of a more sophisticated, cosmopolitan visitor. But the nearby mountains, which include Mont Blanc, put Chamonix on the map originally. Long regarded as the ski Mecca of the European Alps the view of steep-sided peaks from the valley-floor is sensational. Other bases in the Chamonix valley include the pretty villages of Argentière, Vallorcine and Les Houches.

Skiing in Chamonix
The Chamonix valley is home to a number of unconnected pisted ski areas. The tree-lined runs of Le Tour appeal to beginners and intermediates while experts enjoy the chin-high moguls on the Grands Montets above Argentière. Miles of extreme off-piste skiing lie beyond the pistes. The backcountry ski terrain is defined by crevasses and steep couloirs and it is best to explore it with a mountain guide. The world’s most famous off-piste glacier run, the 20 kilometre-long Vallée Blanche, starts high above the town from the Aiguille du Midi.

Summer in Chamonix
Chamonix is the exception to the rule that ski resorts are quieter during the summer months. By contrast Chamonix’s busiest period is high summer: walkers, climbers and sightseeing tourists flock to the Mont Blanc area. Golf and tennis are other popular summer activities.

Buying luxury ski property in Chamonix
Chamonix appeals to property buyers looking for extreme slopes, powder snow and easy access (the resort is only an hour’s motorway drive from Geneva airport) so property for sale in Chamonix is snapped up fast. Ski chalets in the Mont Blanc region are expensive and demand for luxury mountain property is high. Real estate prices in Chamonix town are comparable to the London property market. Buyers may also find property opportunities, which range from renovations of old farm buildings to new upmarket developments, in the outlying villages of Les Praz, Les Bossons, Argentière and Les Houches.
